New CCPA Report: Much More Than Books
In November, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) published Much More Than Books: The Case for Robust Funding for the Toronto Public Library.
To no one’s surprise, Our Public Library is awesome! Here are just a few of the key takeaways:
🛟 Lifeline for Education and Lifelong Learning
Our Public Library’s extensive collections – like books, newspapers, DVDs, and e-resources – make high-quality educational materials free and accessible to everyone.
The library’s programs serve all ages and needs, from children exploring story times or after-school clubs to adults seeking personal finance workshops or digital literacy classes.
By enabling continuous skill-building and knowledge-sharing, Our Public Library nurtures a culture of lifelong learning that boosts both personal growth and overall community well-being.
🦸 Champion of Economic Opportunity
Whether you are a job seeker looking to improve your résumé, an entrepreneur in need of cost-effective workspaces and research tools, or a newcomer exploring new career paths, Our Public Library lowers barriers to success.
The library provides computers, free Wi-Fi, specialized databases, and reference assistance to support professional growth. Through targeted workshops, networking events, and resources for small business development, Our Public Library empowers users to thrive in a competitive economy without the burden of hefty fees.
🧫 Catalyst for Social Inclusion
Our Public Library goes far beyond lending books by actively reaching out to underserved and vulnerable populations. The library offers safe, welcoming environments where those experiencing homelessness can find warmth, internet access, and a sense of community.
By hiring social workers, hosting newcomer programs, and providing language classes, Our Public Library ensures that all members of society—regardless of their background or circumstances—have equitable opportunities to learn, connect, and succeed.
🤝 Hub for Culture and Community Building
In a diverse city like Toronto, TPL branches serve as critical gathering places that promote cultural understanding and dialogue. Multilingual resources and events celebrate the city’s rich tapestry of backgrounds and traditions, helping newcomers integrate more smoothly while allowing long-time residents to broaden their horizons. This consistent flow of cultural programming fosters empathy, sparks meaningful conversations, and reinforces a strong sense of community pride and belonging.
Looking Ahead
Funding for Our Public Library remained stagnant throughout the Ford and Tory years, despite its clear and vital role in city life. Sustaining and expanding its reach requires increased and consistent funding.
2025 offers hope for a better future. By investing in Our Public Library, we safeguard a valuable public institution that drives social progress, fuels economic development, and strengthens community cohesion for generations to come.
Here’s to a brighter future.
