After receiving thousands of messages from supporters of our public library during the past 24 hours, the influential budget committee of the Library Board voted unanimously last night to reject neghbourhood library branch closures and cuts to hours of service. We’re making an impact!
However, this decision could be overturned when the full Library Board meets on November 21st.
There is also the real possibility that library budget reductions may be achieved by slashing librarians and library staff. Already, the Board has adopted a plan to cut 100 librarian and staff positions, even though there is not a single children’s librarian in the entire system and library staff has already been reduced by 10% since amalgamation of the City.
Librarians are not gravy. Books aren’t either. The Library Board and City Council need to hear that. So please sign this petition and share it widely.
